SAND BAY MANAGEMENT COMMITEE
By Tony Horry, Kewstoke Parish Councillor.

Our sea-shore is one of the greatest assets but it also provides the residents and visitors with some problems. Cleanliness of the beach at Sand Bay is always a subject of discussion.

Through local initiatives a new management team has been set up to monitor the local environment of Sand Bay, Sand Point and Middle Hope.

Our District Councillor Ian Porter chaired the first meeting of the committee, which consisted of representatives of Kewstoke Parish Council, English Nature and North Somerset Council. The committee identified specific areas which need attention including beach safety, water quality, coastal protection, wildlife management, litter management, recreational and commercial use.

"We hope the committee will bring interested parties together to influence and promote good management of the Sand Bay and the coastal areas. We expect to ask the National Trust, the Environment Agency and Marine Conservation Society to work with the committee on specific problems. Although there will not be any extra budget we hope the committee will be able to tap into existing resources."

The Parish Council has secured funding support for the wooden broadwalk connecting the Car Park opposite the Commodore to the concrete path along the top of the sea wall. This will provide easier access

The Parish Council also has initial plans to create a disabled access point opposite the Sand Bay Holiday Village. The Management Committee will meet quarterly, with the next meeting in Sept 2004.
