VILLAGE GREEN, CROOKES
LANE, KEWSTOKE.
Background
This 1.45 acre area was originally purchased by Axbridge Rural District
Council as part of the development of the council housing estate in the
locality. This area of land was designated as a proposed replacement school
site in the Somerset County Council Plan of 1958. In the 1960's and early
1970's the Parish Council obtained long leases from the local authorities
which made it possible and viable to install play equipment. Later, only
short leases were allowed, making it less viable to carry out long term
projects to enhance the area. In the 1980's it was possible to secure
a Countryside Commission grant which enabled some landscaping, but again
projects were hampered because of lack of long-term leases and assurances
that the area would remain an open space.
New Lease of Life
In 1994, Woodspring DC applied for planning permission for housing on
the site. The application was refused and with no commitment from Avon
CC for using the land for educational purposes, the District Council designated
the area as an open space. In 1995, with the knowledge of reorganisation
of local government to be implemented in 1996, the Parish Council requested
and was granted a 35 year lease. This took effect from March 1996.
Development since 1996.
The Parish Council formed a Village Green Project Group involving many
local residents in a self help programme to enhance the area. This project
received initial support and advice from the North Somerset Council Environmental
Group and due to the commitment and enthusiasm of the Project Group has
resulted in:
Clearing
the undergrowth and removing dead trees Improving the grassed area particularly
on the north end of the green. Erecting a log fence around the site. Planting
new trees and creating a shrubbery area. Creating a wild flower meadow
area. Installing new play equipment. Installing an open shelter and a
number of seats. Siting a commemorative stone.
This
was initially a five-year plan to develop the Village Green into an attractive
amenity area with play equipment to encourage its use by families and
children. Fund raising events and regular working parties have enabled
all age groups to become involved in the project. We are justly proud
of the results that have been achieved within the five years. Trees, shrubs,
bulbs and a wild flower meadow have been planted, replacing the overgrown
areas. With play equipment, benches and an open shelter the Village Green
is now a light airy and pleasant amenity for all ages to enjoy.
